On Jan. 4, 1970, the last Erie Lackawanna long-distance train, The "Lake
Cities", ran for the last time between Hoboken and Chicago. Both the
eastbound and westbound trains arrived at their destinations on Jan. 5,
1970, closing the book on Erie Lackawanna long-distance passenger service.
The passenger equipment, which was the pride of the Erie Lackawanna's
operating department, would soon begin leaving the property, spread to the
four corners of the continent. The attached photo is of the last train
number 5 on the morning of January 5, 1970 at Kent, Ohio. It is interesting
to note that the sleeper was still on the train and not dropped off at
Youngstown as there would be no eastbound train to pick it up.

Forty years later, several of these cars have been reunited under the
umbrella of ELDCPS. With the continued financial support of our donors and
members, Jan. 4-5, 1970 will no longer be the final chapter in the story of
Erie Lackawanna passenger operations. ELDCPS was formed to bring back the
experience of passenger rail travel on the Erie Lackawanna, and the next
chapter in the story has already begun. Thanks to all of you who have
supported us over the years. While it is sad to think about the end of
trains 5&6, followed by the EL itself just 6 years later, it is good to know
that one day soon we will recreate a piece of that legacy for everyone to
enjoy.
