Attached is an article from the Expressman's Monthly magazine of February 1880. It has a tongue-in-cheek article about lost cars and discusses a boxcar from Dunkirk or Buffalo (probably Erie) that gets lost out west. It also mentions other RRs that repaint the car and claim it as their own, and farmers who strip cars for lumber or other uses.

I was wondering if this was a problem in EL times - how often did cars get lost. Were they ever "stolen"? Are there any identifying marks on a car besides the painted numbers on the sides and ends?
