"No.1_Sched_0550_OG.jpg" - image/jpeg, 875x484 (24bit)

Ray and list, when the Erie Limited went into service in June 1929 the
Twentieth Century Limited and Broadway Limited were on twenty-hour
schedules between New York and Chicago versus the Erie Limited running time
westbound from Jersey City of 24 hours and 15 minutes. But there was enough
business that the Erie Limited probably did pretty well. Intermediate
traffic was undoubtedly much more important for Erie Nos. 1 and 2.

In looking at some Official Guides on-line I discovered:

- 1929 - The westbound train made stops at Paterson, Ridgewood, Goshen
and Middletown, taking two hours and four minutes to reach Port Jervis.
- 1940 - No. 1 had added stops at Rutherford (with a bus connection from
Rockefeller Center), Passaic and Suffern and took 2h and 14m to get to Port
Jervis. The overall running time from Jersey City to Chicago was exactly 24
hours.
- 1950 - By 1950 the Rutherford stop had been dropped and No.1 took
exactly two hours to get to Port Jervis, fourteen minutes faster than in
1940. It doesn't seem like just eliminating the Rutherford stop would save
fourteen minutes. However, the schedule noted Nos. 1 and 2 were now
diesel-powered [see attached] and I wonder if the steam-powered No.1 had to
make a water stop en route? Jersey City-Chicago took 23h and 10 minutes. By
1950 the Twentieth Century and Broadway Limited were making the trip in a
flat 16 hours.
- 1960 - The final year of Erie operation. No. 1 still made the same six
stops between Jersey City and Port Jervis but the running time had been
reduced six minutes to 1h and 54m. The overall running time, Hoboken to
Chicago for No. 1, was 23h and 30m.
