Hi all,

I dug up these slide my friend Curt Carlough shot on April 12, 1974. The
first shot shows train A/CX-99 arriving at Great Notch, headed west. (Note
the 3-lamp head over a staggered 2-lamp head block signal at the right! :)

Apparently, a meet was set up for eastbound NY-100 at Lincoln Park, but that
train was either way underpowered or had some power fail. Either way, the
dispatcher had the A/CX-99 park its cars on the passing siding there, and
had its power shove NY-100 to the top of the grade in Great Notch. The next
shot shows the head end of the troubled NY-100 entering the crossovers at
the Great Notch interlocking, led by U36C 3319 and SD45 3623, at 1:05 PM.
Two minutes later, we see the trio of GP35s shoving hard against the Dunmore
caboose (itself an anomaly on a high-speed pig train) of NY-100 as it rolls
through the interlocking. That's the Caldwell Branch going off to the left
there (with the 3-arm searchlight signal). Turning around, Curt got the
power shoving past under the Long Hill Road bridge. Note the ripped nose
decal.

Finally, Curt waited around long enough for the power to come drifting back
light to return to Lincoln Park and get its train to head west again. The EL
crewmember gives a typically EL "friendly wave."

All in a day's work at Great Notch! Must have been a good day, since Curt
was also able to zip over to Ridgewood Jct to catch PO-98, but that's
another photo for another time. :)

Another time, Curt caught Train BC-2 passing the Great Notch station at 9:35
AM led by a pair of 6-axle GE beasts. Trailing the train was U25B 2523,
doing its best to help the train make the grade. Note the string of
Boutell-bound autoracks immediately in front of the caboose, as well as the
red-over-red block signal.

Enjoy, and thanks to Curt Carlough for capturing these wonderful images!

- Paul
