Bob and List,

These two bridges are going over the Commercial Slip. This plate girder
bridge was put in about 1908, replacing a through truss bridge. The
Commercial Slip is the official end of the Erie Canal and was where the
famous "joining of the waters" ceremony was held by Gov. Clinton in 1825,
when the Canal was opened.

This Slip was filled in about 1925. Around 2008 it was dug out and is now
the center piece of Buffalo Inner Harbor Development. A replica of the DL&W
bridge was built, although not in the original location.

The State and City wanted to build the Slip 100 feet east of the original
for cost reasons. They said there were no stones used here and it didn't
matter. I worked with preservationists and produced the only photo showing
stone wall construction. The photo was saved from the dumpster back in the
1970's by John Willever, and John sold me the photo. His photo got the
original Slip put back in.

Attached are photos of it today. I have used John's photos and those of
Steamtown for several development projects along the River. Right now I am
working with a group to rebuild half the DL&W freighthouses that were next
to the Slip, along the River. This area was originally known as Central
Wharf.

C 0341-C0350 Are as marked. Great shots of the cramped coal yard area in
down town Buffalo. Not to be confused with the main huge sprawling yards
out at E. Buffalo.
These are all pre the new Buffalo Passenger Terminal that will come in a few
years. The last few showing the old passenger station from afar. A
question to our Buffalo list members: In C0348 what are the two bridges
going over?
