Subject: The boxcars with roof hatches
"84421_Cornwall_NY-5-77.jpg" - image/jpeg, 1299x863 (24bit)

Going along the lines of the "bulk flour" idea, here's some more grist for
the mill. The EL had five 40' boxcars (84420-84424) rebuilt with six roof
hatches and reclassified as "LC" cars (box car with side doors and roof
hatches).

Here's a photo of 84421 at Cornwall, NY in a Conrail train in May of 1977.
(freight car fans, note! Coupled to the EL car is one of the rare CNJ 2-bay
cylindrical hoppers, and on the other side a CNJ 2-bay covered hopper
(ex-L&NE?) with what appears to be a long line of lettering painted out at
the top?)

Note the clearly-visible roof hatches, and also note the dustiness of the
door, particularly around the bottom. Could this car have been meant for
bulk flour? (or some other bulk commodity?). Anyone know for what service
these five cars were rebuilt? I assume the car was unloaded through the
doors (hence the powder residue below the doors)

And anyone know why they're crossed off the EL Freight Car Diagram Book that
the ELHS sells? The book is updated to 1975, and this photo is obviously
later than that...
