Here's what happens when the backup move hits a truck at a
grade crossing --- this is on the NYS&W after such a
collision on a back-up move in 1965. They were doing the
Peanut Whistle routine on the deadhead between Little Ferry
and Susquehanna Transfer. But they also did this move on the
North Hawthorne-Transfer deadheads during the last year of
service.. And the trips were made at regular express
passenger service speeds too.

OT but pertinent, maybe: Back in the day when many of the
east end LIRR trains used DD1 electrics to continue to Penn
Station, the deadhead moves were done with the peanut
whistle -- the DD1 pulled the train into NYP, passengers
discharged, and the train backed out with the peanut whistle
hooked up -- 55 mph in the tunnel, then 15 mph around the
Sunnyside loop and backing all the way to the former Long
Island City passenger station for daytime cleaning and
servicing -- then the DD1 would pull the train forward to F
Tower -- then reverse through the tunnel with the peanut
whistle leading into the platform track. In winter, the move
was done as fast as possible because the DD1s did not the
capability to heat a train, so between LIC and NYP and then
out to Jamaica, there was no heat, other than the residual
heat from being hooked up to steam lines during the day at
LIC, and except during busy rush hours, while dwelling on
the platform at NYP.
