Subject: Focal Length Field of View

I thought I would post these three pictures I took at Port Jervis back in
1992. It shows how the focal length: distance between the lens and the
focal plane - where the glass plate, sheet film, or roll film, or now
charge-coupled device is located - affects the distance between objects. I
took this picture in the spring. There was still some snow on the ground
on the ground. 55 mm is the lens that most displays how humans perceive
images. The Nikon FTN was mounted on a tripod and only the lenses were
changed from 35 to 55 to 210 mm. The position of the camera never
changed. You can see how the wide-angle lens (35 mm) extend distances and
the telephoto (210 mm) compress them.
