Subject: Putting a face with a story. Permanent Layoff Board
"IMG_9276.jpg" - image/jpeg, 1936x1288 (24bit)

List member Rich Wisnewski has forwarded a group photo from a retirement
party for someone else about a year ago. Lee Evans was the gentleman with
the red suspenders.

Thanks Rich

Bob

Bob,

Thanks for the news, your tribute below is very nice.

Here's a group photo showing Lee from Mike Farrell's retirement party in
January 2013. I'm glad that I at least met him that day (in fact you may
have introduced me to him, I can't recall clearly - what does that say about
my memory!).

Lee Evans use to say of someone's passing, "that they marked up on the
permanent Layoff Board". Until last night I believe Lee was the oldest living
Lackawanna engineer when it came to seniority rights. Last night he marked
up on that Board. I just visited Lee yesterday in the hospital and he
seemed better than he had been and thus the shocking phone call this morning.

Lee hired in 12-4-46. My dad was 12-22-47 man. In 1952, Lee just prior
to getting married , and my dad four years into marriage bought starter
houses in Kenvil, NJ. Unbeknownst to each, the houses were almost across the
street from each other. Our family's have remained close friends for the
past 62 years. I can sadly say before today, I had known Lee longer than any
other living person. Lee and Genie would have three son's while living
in Kenvil, before moving to Ledgewood around 1960.

He was an engineer, that enjoyed railroading in a very professional way. I
am pleased to say under Conrail, I had the chance to work with Lee,and his
son Brian, who also became an engineer. It was Lee that would watch his
watch, at a meet we would have at Millington, as to whether or not an opposing
superior train would hit the yellow 30 sec before or after a particular
minute. This would determine where and how we would take the siding.
That's professional Railroading.

On one of my visits before Thanksgiving he bent my ear for 90 min just
talking about Lackawanna steam engines. He had a great memory right up to the
end. At a late age he even got a computer. He was proud of his email
address MP102MH thinking no one would know it, but had to bust his bubble on
that one. MP102 is Mammy Heaters Curve near Pocono Summit.

Growing up on the west side of Scranton, as a young teenager he got a cab
ride either on a pusher or a local freight going west and when the engineer
put him in the engineers seat and told him to run the engine his destiny
was sealed. The Layoff Board is a destiny we all can't escape, but I'm glad
Lee did for such a long time, and that during that time we were good
friends.
