Here are a few more photos... some more great John Long shots of various
trailers on the original 75' version of the cars, and one I found on
Railpictures.net of one of the rebuilds at Altoona back in 2006 (!!!) being
used by the Juniata Shops. Note on the latter photograph, the level ends and
cambered center are very obvious. What looks like a set of vertical
stiffeners within the C-channel in the middle of the car might actually be a
makeshift toolbox or strapping holder.

I remember E-mailing Larry De Young about this the last time we discussed
this topic on the list, and I seem to recall that he said someone at Conrail
told him the cars had the 10' splice in the middle. After showing him
photos, he agreed it did appear that the ends were added, not the center
spliced.

Paul and Schuyler,



I'm not really seeing the "flat section" in the car center. What is very
obvious is the tilting up of the spliced ends. This may have been an
accident of the engineering, but it possibly was intentional; if the camber
was extended into the spliced ends, the couplers may have ended up too low.
Note also the stiffeners inside the C-channel between the triple vertical
stiffeners and the stirrup bolts.



The remarkable thing about the John Long Akron photo is the "triple 24"
loading in the first three cars. This is the earliest instance I've seen of
loading three highway trailers on a flat. Later examples include the four
hitch XTTX version of the F89F cars, and the "triple 28" RTTX cars of the
1980s. The yellow/dark green trailers are Chicago and North Western. Wow, a
big thank you from me for posting this one, Paul! By the way, can anyone
confirm that the tandem axle Erie trailers are 35 foot versus 32 foot?
