Group,

My father (Henry Vitz) was able to find the slides he took of the ELs car
dumper in Leonia used for the sand trains in 1963. These were taken prior
to the dumper being placed in operation by Geo. M. Brewster and Sons, Inc.
The pictures were taken in December of 1962 while my father worked for the
contractor. The dumper was located just south of Fort Lee Road on the
Northern Branch and was only used for the Route 95 project north of Route 46
up to Fort Lee.

Sand was originally brought from Wanaque, NJ near the Raymond Dam down the
Erie Greenwood Lake Branch into Croxton and then headed north to Leonia.
The sand was dumped into the slurry pit under the dumper and pumped with a
dredge pump and piping up to a mile away. The source of sand ran out in
Wanaque sooner than expected. A deal was made with another contractor that
had ties to the sand pits in Wooduff's Gap on the Lehigh and Hudson River.
Sand was taken from that area down the L&HR into Port Morris Yard then down
the Boonton Line and up the Northern to the dumper site.

Sorry for the quality of the slides, the gremlins are starting to get to
them pretty well.

Chris Vitz
