Now that I have found out that I must use JPG files, these should come through OK. Sorry- but you get to learn something every day.

Since I am grounded due to Black Ice here in the mountains I have had time to scan the front and back ends of the U33C drawing. The truck drawing on rear end is consistent with the spacing portion of the explanation. Hopefully files are not too large.

Here is a definitive answer to the "why?"

It's interesting that it took GE until the U30C to figure it out, and EMD, Alco, Baldwin, FM and Lima never got it.

Thanks to the gelocos group.

Ray,

Axle spacing is determined by the motor suspension. All motors are suspended at one end on the axle and the other end on a crosstie between the side frames. The crosstie within the short axle apace (79-1/2") has only one motor suspended from it whereas the crosstie within the longer spacing (83-1/2"has two motors that face each other. If the truck is operating with the short space leading, the motor orientation within the truck relative to the axles to from which they are suspended is referred to as trail-trail-lead (T-T-L).
