Steve and List,

I've heard many stories about the aromas from the Gowanda glue works.
Looking thru my files I found a photo of a derrick unloading something from
a gon. It appeared to be dripping and I wasn't sure what it was. The
attached photo is circa 1916. It appears to be loading the "fleshings" into
some home-made narrow guage cars. The bucket appears to be dripping. Steve's
description leads me to believe these are fleshings.

The Erie also moved a lot of manure from the City of Buffalo to the farming
communities along the Buffalo & Southwestern. The oders were quite terrible
and I previously, in another post, described moving a siding in Eden NY to
get it away from the depot, as an open gon with manure was frequently parked
there for the farmers. The loading of manure in NY State cities brought
about a Public Service Commission regulation that no more than four gons
could be loaded at a time, That they had to be immediately covered and moved
out. See attached.
