A choice item from today's EL List. It is a photo essay on the workers and plant at the Endicott-Johnson shoe factory in Endicott, NY, around 1950. A nice piece of industrial archaeology, it depicts leather tanners, stampers, shoe assemblers and others at work, using manual processes. In the images of the workers, I could not help but seeing the faces of my own great-grandfather, who worked in a machine shop, and then of my widowed great-grandmother, who worked in a steam laundry. The photos show what life was like for most American workers of that period.
