Ed All the Lackawanna RS3s and the Erie 1000s had that external pipe.
But it only extended to the top of the doors. I know what you mean where
on some RS3s it sticks strait up above the roof line. I'm not sure if the
Erie 900s once had it and it was removed, or rerouted inside the car body?
The rectangle box on top of the hood right along side that pipe is the
Generator Air Duct. Not sure if the pipe had anything to do with that or
not?

I was reviewing some old pictures of ALCO RS units and discovered
something
that EL units did not have that many other railroads had on their units.
About a third of the way up the long hood on the right side is a small
exhaust pipe. I noticed this on a rebuilt engine running on the Delaware
Lackawanna shot at Slateford Junction. It is on George Elwood's 'Fallen
Flags' site. What is this little stack for and why didn't EL units seem to
need it?
