Blake and List,

IIRC, over the years, there were a number of "special" salt trains from
Silver Springs. I came across the attached article this week while
researching the Erie diner question. This article is from the "The Railway
International Passenger And Ticket Agent's Journal", the February 1901
issue. All the cars matched and it was sent on its way by the Mayor of
Portland, Maine by remote control from Portland (Telephone/Telegraph ?)

It appears the Erie went for these public relations stunts with the salt
trains, so President McKinley being involved seems probable. He's noted for
campaigning from his front porch. Maybe he started the train from there.
