The attached 1939 drawing should show you the extent and the modern day
topo a reference. Note the right of way at the intersection of
Marshwood Rd (middle of the map) remain.

When was the Winton Branch in operation?

1. The line was originally called the Jessup Branch and the name later
changed to Winton. Taber does not know when and why the branch name was
changed to Winton.

a. Judge William Jessup was president of the Lackawanna Railroad and
Coal Company. Taber states he constructed a connection to the DL&W Main
at Nay Aug in 1854, but unsure when the "independently constructed
feeder" was absorbed by the DL&W.

The Lackawanna RR operated a line from Childs in Carbondale Township to
Greenville (Nay Aug section of Dunmore) between 1855 and 1857. After
that time, the Lackawanna RR sold its rolling stock and lumber. (source:
Jessup Centennial, 1876-1976, Donald R. Vispi and Edward P. Williams).

b. 1874 the DL&W Winton Branch was built. W Winton was a Scranton Banker
and the primer mover behind the construction. (source: Jessup
Centennial)

My working theory: Branch was called "Jessup" between 1855 and 1857 or
1874 when controlled by the Lackawanna RR, and Winton after 1874 when
controlled by the DL&W.

2. I can roughly date the abandonment between 1900 and 1920. I do not
have any reference the precise years.

a. Question, was the line in operation for the 17 years between 1857 -
1874?

3. Finally, Tabor states that the Winton Br only hauled coal, that there
was never any passenger service over that line.
