Subject: Springfield show goodies for EL (and Erie) fans! :)
"el1.jpg" - image/jpeg, 1600x1200 (24bit)

Still recovering from the Springfield train show (is it just getting
bigger?) Here are some items of EL and Erie note....

- JJL Models (Joe Lofland) had their new Bowser 12-panel 70-ton hopper cars
in EL at the show. The cars are beautifully lettered (yes, I'm biased since
I did the art, but the actual printing done by Bowser is SUPERB - you can
almost read the tiny 1" trust lettering in the upper left corner!), and also
included with the cars are Intermountain wheelsets and Kadee "scale" whisker
couplers. They come in four different numbers, and can be ordered from
jjlmodels.com

- JJL was also showing the eagerly-anticipated Erie bay-window caboose - Joe
had pre-production rapid prototyping samples that show the basic layout of
the car. The roof looked like it had shingles on it :), but that's an issue
with the rapid prototyping machine that will be resolved. The car is based
on measurements of the prototype C333 at Jim Thorpe, PA. Joe said he hoped
to start casting these in the next 2-3 weeks, and he just needs to wait for
all the etchings for the ends and roofwalk before they can ship. The samples
look GREAT! You can pre-order these cars now as well.

- Eastern Seaboard Models was showing their new N scale Keyser Valley
caboose - there was a sample of the actual resin kit, and they showed three
car painted by Scott Lupia (in CR, DL&W and EL "Spartan Red" schemes) that
looked phenomenal.

- Atlas Model Railroad Company announced their newly retooled Alco S2
switcher that features improved radiator grilles, separate grabs, and sound.
Oh yes, and EL in three roadnumbers! However, one of the roadnumbers (521)
was the unit with the Baldwin cab, and the other two roadnumbers (541, 542)
lacked the "Radio Equipped" on the cab, so I'm going to ask them if they can
correct those. They're also doing two NYS&W roadnumbers in the short-lived
silver-and-maroon-stripe scheme.

Other items:

- When asked about their new "Rapido USA" line of equipment (they were
showing a beautiful pre-production wood reefer), they acknowledged that
their next car will be "a 1960s prototype" and, when queried if I could run
one on my 1975 EL layout, they replied, "Yes, that would be appropriate."
They wouldn't divulge squat about it, but it sure sounds like another good
car for EL modelers.

- Paul
