Subject: X0079 Proper ID
"X0079_crop.jpg" - image/jpg, 670x544 (256c)

Pete Van Seggern Has been diligently working on trying to properly ID
X0079, and I have been giving him a hard time, in that he hadn't totally
convinced me. Pete is probably right, but there are issues that are not
100% explainable, but here is what might have happened. If this coal
dock photo, which Peter properly reversed the image of, is down along the
River in Oswego, then It apparently got torn down, right after the photo
was taken, and a new Lackawanna Frt House built on the same property. The
Frt House roof is seen in the Wikipedia photo, and appears to still be
under construction. Below is a few of our correspondence regarding this.
Both photo's appear to be about 1909. If any locals would care to comment,
we would love to hear your thoughts. If Steamtown has any correspondence on
this matter that would help too.

Bob:

I was just looking at the Wikipedia article on Oswego. In it, there's a
1909 panoramic view that seems to be taken from the top of the coal trestle
in view X0079. At the extreme left of the panoramic view is the Hunter
Carpet and Furniture Co. which shows in the X0079 view. I hope that this
confirms your suspicions.

Bob:
My last try..

Two buildings, the "Carpets" building and the "Hunter" building, are side
by side in the first two pictures below.

A) Compare the top floor window cornices? of the Carpets building X0079
picture with the top floor side windows in the panoramic picture.

B) Compare the side window cornices on the next to top floor window of the
Carpets building in the X0079 picture with the same windows on the
panoramic picture. (In the X0079 picture, that window is visible through
the balcony of the building at the extreme left of the view.

C) Compare the shape of the upper right corner of the top of the Carpets
building in both pictures.

D) The roof corner trim of "The Hunter" building is the same shape in both
pictures.

E) On the Carpets building, the sign a floor below the "Carpets" sign is
most likely "Rugs" in both pictures.

F) "The Hunter" sign is in the exact same relationship (vertically) to the
"Carpets" sign in both pictures.

G) In both pictures, there's a small arm of some sort that appears to
protrude from the upper right corner of the "Carpets" building. It's the
same in both pictures.

I've also added another photo at the bottom (which doesn't substantiate
anything, but it is interesting) that might be the trestle in X0079 before
it was roofed over. It's the third picture in
http://www.oswego-history.com/historic-oswego-pictures/ This photo
indicates that in earlier days with smaller sailing vessels, they were
loaded in the river and that the trestle in the X0079 was probably the only
loading facility before the larger facility shown in X0080 and X0081 was
built. (I haven't figured out exactly where they were located.)

Thanks for putting up with me,
Pete

Peter
Thanks for going through this. I will concur on the two arms sticking out
in each picture. That's the most promising distinction, connecting the two
prints, and thus the location.
The old panorama photo is so dark you can't make out any detail in the
buildings. ( Unfortunately )

Val Maps show this exact location as that of the DL&W Freight House, which
appears to be still under construction in the Wikipedia photo. Note the
roof is not completed. What is the date on that photo?
Since these 1918 maps show the DL&W coal dock back in town, NOT down here
by the river, maybe the X0079 coal dock got torn down, and a freight house
built in its place. Especially since the RR already owned the property? TT
Taber list this newer Freight house as being built ABOUT 1909. We don't
have and exact date on the X0079 shot, with 1909 being just a guess, since
so many of Barry's prints don't have dates. The maps only show the
buildings in question as 3 and 4 story dwellings, no mention of any type of
production or factory. Maybe the signs were just advertisement?

Just looked through the LONG group of photo's associated with Oswego.
There was a second photo in there that also showed two buildings with
Hunter signage on them. There was also a photo of the two track DL&W coal
dock that was up in the middle of town. We have previously seen it in the
C Series. You probably were not viewing these plates at the time those were
shown?

OK, What's the date on the panorama Wikipedia photo?

Just spent another hour and a half, so I'm sure glad the Devils are not
playing tonight!

Thanks
Bob
