Rich,

I'm assuming the railroad put in the rubrails, since the 85' car was
originally designed for piggyback use (though it didn't last long in that
service at all before it went into general merchandise service). I have yet
to find a top view photo of the rebuilt cars, sadly (at least not one that
doesn't have a piece of equipment sitting on top!) The paint indeed was
black with white lettering, I've attached a photo from my collection showing
this. Note that all these cars appeared to have the Roman lettering; I've
never seen one with the Gothic (though that doesn't mean they never were
painted that way - anyone have a photo to prove me wrong? Would love to see
it....)

I'm planning on simply cutting a 10' piece out of a second Walthers flat and
splicing it into the center of the 75' car, just like what the EL did. Note
that the 10' was level while the two halves of the 75' car had an upward
camber, so the finished car looked like an arch with the top 10' smashed
level. :)
