They've been published in various books and magazine articles, two examples are attached.

I remember reading that as well. I'm wondering if these units weren't just painted up for DL&W (with EMD lettering) for an actual
EMD order, but were used to demonstrate on their way to the Lackawanna (hence the EMD lettering)?

It still doesn't explain why EMD would paint them up in DL&W colors, though?
