In the early days of the EL, I was trackside many days and so can offer some
detail about use of the PA's from that time.

The main through line trains of course were 1 & 2 plus 5 & 6. These were the
trains that frequently got three units, either 3 E-8s or 2 E8's plus a PA.
In every case of the latter that I witnessed, the PA was the trailing unit.
On at least one day, Jun 25 1961, I saw all four of these trains and they
were as follows:

# 6: First section; E8's 818 and 831 with 12 cars

# 6: Second section; E8's 833 and 814 with 7 cars

# 1: E8's 814 and 833 plus PA 860 with 15 cars

# 2: E8's 813 and 829 plus PA 861 with 14 cars

# 5: E8's 810 and 828 plus PA 861 with 13 cars

It is interesting that the 861 accompanied a different set of E8's on Trains
2 & 5, trailing both times. I would not say it never happened, but I never
saw a PA in the lead on one of these trains. There were other power
variations on occasion but the day I have detailed is pretty typical.

The secondary trains such as 40/43 had many power variations such as two
PA's, two F3's, 3 F3's, probably whatever you can dream up.

In commuter service, I think I saw the PA's everywhere on the former Erie
side including the Caldwell Branch.

The attached shot shows Train Number 1 with the 824+810+851 at Chester Jct.
on July 7, 1964.
