I'll test the information highway that the EL list offers. Semaphore
signals by themselves can be a brain teaser, and I'll be the first to state that
at least on the Lackawanna, the further you go back in Employee Time
Tables, and rule books the less pertinent information seems to be available.
It's like there was this unwritten rule that certain things were obvious, had
been that way for eons, and thus didn't have to be explained in writing.

So, I'll limit this question to block station order boards. Most order
boars at Stations, were square ended and red. When A train was required to
get orders at that station the agent / operator would set the order board,
which in most cases meant raise it. My question is why do some old station
photo's show order boards with pointed blades? Does this stem from the
original ( predecessor ) railroads own rules that varied and differed from the
Lackawanna's after the turn of the century? Not that there is any clear
written rule after 1900 that I have found.

Attached are a few Stations showing both square and pointed boards.
