Folks,

Here are some excellent shots taken by Ed Montgomery of the smoldering
Hoboken grain piers, as well as a shot of transloading of subway cars to
an EL carfloat, and a mystery engineer shot - can anyone help out with
that one? Below is Ed's description of the images..

- Paul

Here are the pictures of the grain pier fire and subway car transfer I
was writing about. They were taken on a very overcast day in July
of 1977. In fact, I took the PATH over to Newark that day and also
photographed the CNJ Broad Street Station.

The Long Slip shot shows the transfer of the subway cars to the
carfloat. This was probably the last or one of the last jobs these
cranes did. Soon after they were gone. I suspect that CR cut
them up. Do you have any information on them?

The two shots of the piera show that they had recently burned.
They were still smoldering. It is interesting to see their
construction with firebreak walls to prevent the whole structure from
burning down.

The last picture was the engineer of EL 401 who took me aboard
as he ran the Comet cars and their locomotives through the wash
rack. There was probably some agreement that did not permit the
trains from running through the racks self propelled. He was an
interesting guy who lived in Netcong. He was telling me how he
used to run Poconos and that he turned NKP 759 on the wye at
West End even though others said it couldn't be done. He did it
with the 4-8-4's back in the 40s. I forgot his name but I suspect
somebody in New Jersey may remember him.
