A few people asked me what it looks like today, I’m sending a BING Map link below that shows the ballasted section of the R&S running off to the south to connect up with the D&MtM alignment this helper station photo was taken looking east from that west leg of the wye (now ballasted) the R&S has removed the straight track and the east leg of the wye. DL&W plow photo is taken in 52’ about to the right of the fellow on top of the car; the PJ Templeton photo is an EL freight by the depot in the early 1970’s, and the depot is at the extreme left of the photo across from the cantilever signal bridge; the 1960 Ariel shot is looking back west. The coal trestle was 6 tracks 2 center mains, 2 passing sidings-controlled by the operator in the tower far center-right of the cantilever signal bridge, and the west ends were controlled by a switch tender. The controlled siding next to the box cars had a pocket track where the pusher would sit, and e/b would pull into the siding get coal and water if needed, pull up to the tower and the pushers would come out of the pocket track couple on the towerman would line him for the main and they’d shove him out of the Genesee Valley up the 1.47% 14 mile Dansville Hill to Wayland Tank, which was the west end of Wayland Yard where the PS&N came in and there was a wye there to turn the pushers to drift back to Groveland for their next shove!

I’ve seen many pictures of the Dansville Hill helper station at Groveland, NY 8 miles west from my hometown of Dansville, home of Dansville Hill the 2nd steepest grade on the DL next to the Poconos’ grades, but never this busy. Date and photographer unknown from the Sheldon King estate. Blew me right away; there’s only one track off to the right that the R&S uses to access the old Dansville & Mt Morris to Dansville, view is looking east.
