Subject: The mystery of the tapered turtleback roof end...
"compare-diners.jpg" - image/jpeg, 200748 bytes, 1450x1128 (24bit)

While working on the ELDCPS site, Mike Steinberg's sharp eye spotted
something very interesting. Diner 747 had what appears to be a
one-of-a-kind end. Whereas most other rebuilt Erie diners and
heavyweight coaches had their roofs terminate at the ends, with an
arched top portion, and a flat horizontal lower portion, this diner
seemed to have a lower portion that tapered down from the center. See
the attached image for a comparison of the ends of 742 (left) and 747
(right).

Note that the 747 appears to have an aluminum diaphragm, which doesn't
seem standard, and might explain the need to taper that roof edge.

Does anyone know if the Erie experimented with diaphragms in the course
of rebuilding these cars? It most definitely seems to be a one-off, as
no other picture that I have of the 739-series diners and 1000-series
coaches has the same end as the #747.
