Ron and list,

It took me a while to find what I believe to be the Clinton St coal pocket and
it was right by Ron's suspected location. I have attached map snippets from
the Buffalo 1894 City Atlas, 1900 Sanborn and 1940 Sanborn as well as from a
1927 aerial survey. The aerial is blown up and I enhanced it as much as I
could, but you really can't see much of the coal pocket. The facilities south
of the Erie (below in the aerial) are the PRR's (WNY&P) Babcock St yards and
repair shops and American Car & Foundry's facilities, formerly Buffalo Car
Works. Downtown Buffalo would be approximately two miles west (to the left) of
this area.

The coal pocket is not shown on the 1894 map, listed as Hillside Iron & Coal
on the 1900 map and reconfigured and listed as Walter Zoladz Lumber, Builders
Supplies and Fuel Corpn. on the 1940 map. Note the "Stairs & Old Trestle"
notation on the 1940 map, which might be the old machinery for the pocket's
bucket lift and conveyor. the 1927 aerial is not high enough resolution to
determine if the facility was still in as built condition at that time.

On the 1900 map the layout and dimensions of the pocket machinery appear to
closely match the photo and description of the pocket in the "Retail Coal
Pocket Machinery" article that Jim sent.

Clinton Station is only shown on the 1894 atlas. The 1889 Sanborn (updated to
1893) doesn't cover the area north and west of the Erie tracks at Clinton St.

Thanks to Jim and Ron for the material and info,

Henry

P.S. I also found the "Important Fuel Gas Plant" article from the Coal Trade
Journal interesting.
