[From: "Ed Olszewski" If anyone has photos from this trip they would care to
share I would like to see them.]

Ed and List, let me send along a brightened up version of the shot of the
approaching train. This was a gloomy day but a working steam engine on the
old Erie main is always a joy. I've also attached a cropped shot of engine
#302, ex-Reading T-1 #2102 that went on to become one of the American
Freedom Train steam locos. In steam days, I never heard a Reading worker
refer to a "T-1". I only learned of that official nomenclature much later.
They were simply known affectionately and proudfully on the road as the
"Twenty-one Hundreds". The engine looked a tad strange at first that day: I
had seen so many 2100s in action so one with smoke deflectors was a strange
duck. And the Erie never used them either. So the engine in a way looked
like it belonged 15 miles east over on the NYC. #302 was part of a D&H
centennial celebration so the smoke deflectors, I think, were meant to evoke
images of a D&H Challenger. Hey, but it was steam on the Erie main -- and
that was the bottom line of the day!
