Not these...these were actually built new by the D&H @ Colonie, with
boilers supplied by ALCo. Interestingly, ALCo refused to build these locos
for them, given what at the time (1926) was considered outrageously high
boiler pressures. American Loco was not willing to take on the liability.
Though they would agree to build the boilers to the D&H's specs, and
deliver them to their own shops for in-house assembly, making the D&H the
responsible party.

VERY BEEFY!

Probably not good. Old Man Loree (The D&H President from 1907-1938) was
extremely fond of European steam, and liked the look of a small, "rakish"
cab, fastened to the back of a large boiler. Loree was not too concerned
with the crew's comfort, or operating difficulties, having vehemently
fought the I.C.C. in court, flatly refusing to equip his steam locos with
federally mandated stokers. As far as he was concerned, the had "stokers"
that worked just fine; a man with a shovel. Need more coal fed into the
boiler? Put on two Fireman!

another D&H identifying feature...

Outside ashpans. They did use them more than most, but the Erie also has a
few classes of steam that we outfitted with them too, albeit a bit smaller,
like this R-2.
