Enjoy an EL Discovery Hour! Around 10:00 am today witness Norfolk Southern local H55 arriving at Ridgewood Jct. (WJ) on the former Erie Lackawanna (Erie) mainline to wait for a few trains to clear the interlocking. The H55 has two former Southen Railway GP38-2's, many will recall EL had the same locomotives on order in 1975! EL freight trains in the 60's and 70's would do the exact same thing as H55, pause at WJ waiting to take a cut of cars to the former Erie Paterson Yard.
While at the station the first westbound to arrive off the Bergen County line is yet another freight train! This NS local with two GP38's (5617 / 5620) and a small train is heading west up #1 for Suffern NY. Take a moment to look at the former Erie Station on the eastbound and Westbound platforms. Two eastbound and two westbound NJT commuter trains would soon pass through Ridgewood. (Including an E/B with former EL Cabcar 1513, NJT 5113) And finally the H55 gets a lineup and heads eastbound and swings onto the former Erie Mainline toward Glen Rock and Paterson.
Gone are the E-8's, Eastbound Track 2, RS-3's, Stillwell's, Tower Operator and SD-45's. But the last image of WJ Tower shows it's still looking pretty good over three decades since the last EL train passed through town. And six trains in less than an hour on any former EL track is nice to see in 2008 :)
Enjoy,
Todd ~
