Charles,

Welcome for the history...

What we have here is a case of trying to keep too many facts straight in an
ever-aging head.

1) The Erie 0-8-8-0's (when rebuilt to 2-8-8-2's) received new piston valve
front cylinders...

2) The D&H 0-8-8-0's did retain their compound status, though during the
rebuilding process the D&H's loco's front cylinders were bushed, so their
diameter was reduced by several inches, while both front and rear cylinders
had their strokes increased by several inches.

3) And just a couple weeks ago, I was doing some research on the Reading N1
Class. Those locos were build new as 2-8-8-2's, but were later rebuilt to
2-8-8-0's, and THEY were the locos that were converted from Simple/Compound
to just Simple power.

This image of Reading 1826 shows the compound loco in the "as built"
configuration (attachment).

And this image of Reading 1821 shows the loco after rebuilding
(attachment). Note the re-arrangement of the piping from the center
cylinders to the smokebox, and the addition of the new piping from the top
of the front cylinders to the smokebox. Not all that attractive, but
functional.

Now, think about keeping all this (and a pile of other steam loco data
files) in the appropriate mental "folders" without blending them...

MF
