List,

Back in November, Bill Burt asked "What was the 8th Erie shop?" This thread covered Erie shops in the late 1920's. In my recent research, I ran across an interesrting article in "Railway Master Mechanic" magazine from July, 1905. It lists 18 Erie shops. I can't tell if this is a complete list, but I suspect it is. The Erie at that time was making big investments in new tools, probably replaceing belt driven machinery with electric motors.

The article stated that the Erie was running counter to the current trend of consolidating shops and felt a number of smaller shops spread over the system better met its needs. It was also at this time that the Erie introduced piece work into its shops to replace "day" work. This lead to a major strike by machinists in May 1907, lasting to February 1908.

The new tool investments were anticipated to increase light locomotive repairs from 85 a month to 127, a 50% increase.

>As of early 1927, there were eight shops on the Erie. The authority for
this is a Hornell Evening Tribune article in which Bernet's program is
described--it says eight shops will be reduced to four. As of April 1929 there
remained at least seven. At that time it was projected that Susquehanna
would be converted to a passenger car shop and Buffalo, North Hawthorne, and
Kent shops would be "abandoned." Etc.
