The two photos of the Buffalo Station are mislabeled. Photo F#1 shows a view
at the corner of Prime and Main Streets. Photo F#2 shows a view at Main and
Dayton Streets. In later years Dayton Street was re-named West Perry Street.



Photo F#1 shows the second depot used by the DL&W. It was built in 1886. The
first depot was in the Aetna Building on Prime Street at the corner of Lloyd
Street and operated from 1882 to 1886. (see attached 1894 map)



Photo F#2 shows the third passenger depot used by the DL&W, starting in
1900. With the international Pan-Am Exposition in Buffalo in 1901, DL&W
needed a larger depot. So they moved the passenger ticket/waiting rooms into
the ground floor of the 3-story building at Main and Dayton Streets. The
second depot (tri-angular building in F#1) was turned into a baggage room.
The wrap-around awning was installed and expanded in order to handle the
increase in passenger volume. Tracks were also added in Prime Street.



The Lackawanna Hotel served as a hotel until 1902 and saw much use during
the Exposition. After 1902 it was turned into a tenement house. It was often
cited by the newspapers for its filth and vermin on the three upper floors,
yet the first floor was a restaurant serving DL&W patrons. (see drawing from
Steamtown). Next door was a liquor store.



This whole complex was replaced in 1917 by the fourth DL&W Depot, the
magnificent structure most people are familiar with at the foot of Main
Street. The train sheds still stand although the passenger station was
demolished in 1983. All the streets in the 1894 map were removed and this
area was abandoned by the City.



After the year 2000 the City started to develop this area and it is now
known as Canalside, the most popular development in Buffalo. The old streets
have been reconstructed (see attached map). I served as a consultant to the
City and recommended the tracks be reinstalled in Prime Street. This was
included in the 2004 Master Plan but has not yet been completed.
