Subject: Bigger Than the Panama Canal?

List,

The construction and pending opening of the Panama Canal was big news in 1912. Also in this year, Congress passed the Panama Canal Act which forced the RRs to divest themselves of their Great Lakes fleets by 1915. The Erie mounted a public relations campaign to keep theirs (check Erie Mags for 1913 and 1914) and the LV took their case to the Supreme Court, loosing in 1917.

Someone asked me off list if the Erie was actually comparing itself to the Panama Canal? Yes, they were. See the attached first page of the booklet.

PS In 1961, just after the merger, the new track connecting the huge Erie East Buffalo Yard with DL&W's massive yard in Sloan (just a quarter mile away) was called the Panama.
