Next Block Line issue's EL content.... I scanned the abandonment applications and the freight timetable, and attached those (a lot
simpler than typing all of it!)

New items include the CNJ leased C424s and RS3s, the reasoning for the MILW GP40s, and train lashups at Marion.

On an off-note... is Bob Scuorzo still with us? He's referenced a lot in the Block Line items, but I haven't heard the name in
recent years?

OCT 73

(CNJ) Although one might think the CNJ should have an abundance of power since pulling out of Pennsylvania, that situation does not
exist. Frankly I am unable to explain the power shortage when looking at the number of freights they are running but the situation
as far as the CNJ is concerned is for real. Late in July they leased C424 #2408-10 from the EL. Either the EL wanted them back or
the CNJ didn't like them, but they didn't last long. Their replacement came in the form of four RS3s also leased from the EL. Units
1050, 1051 and 1053 are ex-DL&W and have not run on Jersey rails since shortly after the EL merger when they, with their mates, were
shipped westward. Unit 1057 is the EL's newest RS3 being rebuilt from two wrecked RS's within the past year and now holds the
highest number in the 1000 class units. . The RS's will remain until at least the beginning of '74 or until the CNJ's new power
arrives. (Information by: Max Robin, Mike Rudinsky and Frank Reilly)

Weekend rambling: August 13 - Hornell, New York - Parked on a siding just west of EL's engine facility were two pairs of E-8's, and
F-7 and an RS-3. (823-824) & (828-831) (#6114-#1031) The RS appeared to have had a fire in its main generator and the E-8's
apparently waiting to be re-geared for freight service. Parked a few tracks over was Buffalo Creek switcher #48 awaiting
cannibalization. (by: Bob Scuorzo)

(EL) The Erie Lackawanna is single tracking portions of the Erie east of Port Jervis as well as those portions previously mentioned
west of Port Jervis. Members Bob Scuorzo and Gordon Wickham report the westbound track between Howells Jct. and MQ (lead into
Maybrook) has been taken out of service. Can anyone else supply us with exactly what is coming east out of Port Jervis?

(EL) The two Milwaukee Road GP40's which have been wandering around on the EL for over a month now are working off mileage the
Milwaukee Road owes the EL. The mileage stems from transfer runs made in the Chicago area. One passed through Lake Jct. 9/21/73 on
ES99.

(EL-CNJ) The Super C it's not - but no one can say the EL and CNJ have not given it the old college try when it comes to freights NE
99 and NE 100. The two new trains operating between E-Port and Chicago via Lake Jct. were started in mid August on a thirty day
trial; so by the time you read this they may both be a thing of the past. Although they both had very doubtful photogenic
possibilities (see freight schedule) they did bring smaller units into the CNJ-EL pool. Little Centuries and U-Boats were prevalent
in the formerly high horsepower pool. The reason for the smaller power is because of the size of the train, which has been in the
5-15 car range. (All Piggybacks) It even has had the unique distinction of Santa Fe's Super C, which didn't start out big either.
CNJ power is supposedly running all the way to Chicago on both trains - Just what the CNJ needs.

(EL) The SD45 blitz which has completely taken over the EL may have finally run its course. Although no new power will be ordered
for at least a year, when it does come, it will be in the form of 2000 HP or 1800 HP units.

(EL) In early August member Tom Nemeth and myself [Bob Bahrs] spent a very enjoyable weekend of train chasing and watching at
Marion, Ohio. The ELs main diesel shops are at Marion and that is what keeps the ELs E8, F units and 1000 class RSs in abundance
around Marion. Shop people reported that E8s will be around on the EL for another five years. It has also become company policy to
use Es and Fs whenever they are available, which is about 90% of the time on the Dayton Branch. During two days there, we saw such
combinations on the Dayton Branch as (1) F7A, E8, E8; (2) F7A, F7A, F7B, F7A; (3) E8, E8, F7B, E8, RS3, F7A; (4) E8, F7B, E8. On the
main line we saw such combinations as (1) E8, SD45, E8; (2) F7A, U25B, F7A; (3) F7A, F7B, F7B, F7A, as well as F units, RS3 and E
units mixed into many lash ups. For a suitable finale we saw the Ashland turn which runs every Sunday with five RS3s.
Other things which will be happening in the future at Marion will be the construction of a new eastbound hump. This will enable most
eastbound freights to be completely preblocked. The yard at Marion is completely worked with RS3s. There are still four Alco
switchers on the EL, one in black Erie paint. They are stationed at Akron although two are in storage there. Keep an eye out for the
future issues of Rail Classics Magazine as they will be doing an article on the Dayton Branch.

NOTE: The Richfield Springs Br. May be bought and operated by a separate operation. The Andover Branch now has an injunction against
its abandonment, which is causing the postponement in its complete dismantling. Do you know why the B&SW running southwest out of
Buffalo has never been heavily used for tonnage moving westward out of Buffalo?
