Ed,

Yes, Caldwell had a coach yard but I think that was out of use toward the end of passenger service on the branch. I visited the branch on a few occasions, one time riding the line from Essex Fells to Great Notch, then walking the tracks back to Essex Fells. The conductor had not collected fares when we got to Great Notch and was mildly surprised to see me hopping off. So the EL lost a fare on that occasion.

I’m quite sure that the trains laid over at night at Essex Fells at least toward the end. On Friday evenings, all the equipment went back to Hoboken as one train, then returned to Essex Fells early on the Monday. On one Monday, I saw a PA powered train, that unit having been in the proper direction for the run east. At least, that is how my memory has it.

Two rather poor shots are attached. The station shot was taken July 4, 1964 – that’s my Dad’s 52 Plymouth standing by. The second shot was taken near the end, August 19, 1966.

Dan,

I thought the Essex Fells station was closed for passenger service earlier
because I remember the equipment being stored at Caldwell visible from
Bloomfield Ave. That's a few miles east of Essex Fells.

Thanks,

Ed
