Subject: ex-EL GP-35's Live on in Chile!
"FCP_2355_Polpaico_Alan_Miller_10_Dec_2010.jpg" - image/jpeg, 1024x674 (24bit)

I just returned from a trip to Chile and was photographing a line around Santiago which uses re-built ex-US GP-35's in mainline service, including two that were originally built for the EL!

Here are the details:

Former EL GP-35's Nos. 2576 (later Conrail No.3682) and 2582 (later Conrail No.3688) were built/rebuilt at NRE in Dixmoor, Illinois in 1997, sold and shipped to Chile and entered service on Fepasa in January 1998. The units were totally rebuilt including re-gauging to the 5 foot 6 inch gauge with six-wheel trucks for use on the light 100-pound rail on the FCP mainline. They are now model SD39M-2, per NRE. The two EL units were in the first group of 8 such units rebuilt. A second group of six were built by NRE in 1999. Now in service in the Santiago area on the Ferrocarril del Pacifico S.A. (FCP). Currently they are in use in trash train service from Santiago to Montenegro as well as other mainline trains.

No. 2355 was EL No.2582 and No.2356 was EL No. 2576. Posted are photos of the rebuilt ex-EL units taken by my good friend, Alan Miller, who now lives in Santiago. Also posted is a shot of EL No.2576 I took in Croxton in 1968 while relatively new. In 2011, it is great to see a former EL unit in regular service hauling mainline trains! Now, how about having one of them re-painted in EL livery!
