Subject: EL March 1976 NE-97-74 last week of operation.pdf

I was looking through a few Erie Lackawanna Morning Sun books during a quiet spell this morning and noted a photo by Devon Lawton on Page 39 of Larry's EL New York State book showing the last day (Niagara) Falls turn with 2573 and a U25B.

I've been rather amazed at how far afield and how fast EL power was rotating about the system looking at many photos of the last weeks of operation and in so noting such things I now have noted that at least in later days, rather last days at this juncture of knowledge, that GP35 / U25B combinations seemed more likely than pure GP35 or U25B combinations.

To that, see the attached of the last week of NE 97-74 operations out of Utica for Train NE-97.

GP35 / U25B combinations tend to predominate and not one train is a pure set unless it was made up of GP-7's.

It would seem that although this is a small sample it may not be random chance but planned.

Other photos in various books, magazines and internet tend to show such combinations and attached is a recent internet photo of the 2583 - 2520 at Utica on March 13, 1976.

I can recall in 1974 - 1975 many "pure" consists whether they be GP-35's, U25's or C425's. And I have to say there were a few times when I saw three fresh clean GP-35's with the sun shining off the yellow nose and I thought they were the prettiest units anywhere. The U-boats tended to be dirty and ratty looking overall.

Anyway, does anyone know if there was an effort or plan to distribute power in this fashion or was this maybe just random?
