Allen,

Sounds like you want to model Buffalo. The DL&W downtown depot was a major
auto transshipment point. The autos would come in by lake freighter, park
next to the DL&W depot and freighthouse, and unload. See attached photo of
freighter next to freighthouse. Over 150,000/year. Most shipped down state.
This continued into early 50's. Most people don't know about this.

Also, the EL supplied both the Repulic and Bethlehem steel plants with coal
and shipped finished products. The DL&W had a major yard on/next to
Republic. During the late 30's, due to strange ICC regs and tarriffs, the
DL&W would bring coal into Buffalo, take it to their lake dumper, dump it
into a lake freighter, sail the freighter 2 miles up the river back to
Republic, and then unload it!
