Subject: Reminder – P.Plains Station

A reminder that the NY&GL Pompton Plains Station – The Museum of the Township of Pequannock will be open tomorrow morning from 8:00 to 10:30 AM.

This with allow those attending the ELHS spring meet at the nearby Regency House a chance to have breakfast nearby at one of our many diners and restaurants and then visit the museum to see some of our special exhibits pertaining to the railroad operations in the Township, (such as the early 1960s sand trains), without conflicting with the beginning of scheduled formal meet activities at 11:00 AM.

Attached is the earliest known photograph of our building which was constructed in 1877 to replace some sort of temporary structure which likely dated from the railroad's construction in 1871 and the beginning of passenger service in January 1872.

Architectural historians note that our station is a "stick – built" style structure typical of the 1870s. The only notable architectural embellishment is the extra exterior trim, called "Dutch Caps" above each of the 10 windows and five doors. It is thought that this architectural detail was to honor the Townships first European colonists, the Dutch, who settled here in 1695–1696.

The Pompton Plains area was the first area of Morris County that colonists settled in, as noted by the late popular New Jersey historian John T. Cunningham.

We hope that many of you can stop by for a few minutes tomorrow morning.

Jay
