Joshua,

A majority of the coal shipped from the Oswego pier was bituminous and
came off the NY Central in Oswego. The coal operations shut down in
1963. There is an unconfirmed rumor that the coal pier was used once in
1964 but I cannot find any evidence to validate the recollection of the
individual so for now 1963 stands as the last date of use. Most of the
coal shipped from Oswego ended up in Canada. The coal yard in Oswego was
fairly small which limited how much coal could be loaded in a day since
the cars would have to be run down from the upper yard on Utica St.
through the tunnel to the coal pier and the empties brought back up. I
don't recall right now the storage capacity at the pier but I am pretty
sure it was less than 100 cars total (loaded and empty). Some of the
coal came up out of Syracuse in unit trains but alot of it came up on
the local and off the NYC. The coal operations in Oswego ran from 1869
to 1963 using 3 different trestles or loaders with variations to each
over the years.

I am giving a clinic on Lackawanna operations in Oswego this September
at the NMRA's Northeast Region Empire Junction 2012 convention in
Syracuse if you are interested.

I have included a photo of a string of hoppers being brought down to the
pier coming past the Huron Cement terminal.
