Paul, Pat and list:

Thank you very much for the kind words. As Paul Capp mentioned, I
shamelessly convinced him to re-arrange his track plan to fit an
appropriately sized model of the Delaware Viaduct into his layout. The model
is 9 feet long (you're only seeing a little less than half of it in that
photo he posted). It's missing two arches on the east end, and it's actually
about 90% of HO scale (meaning I compressed it by 10%). The truly unique
aspect of this viaduct (and the model as well) is that A) it is on a
'skewed' alignment, meaning its not at right angles to the watercourse, and
B) the segments on the west end are curved AND skewed as the Cut-off curves
to join the Old Main.

It's built entirely of blue foam insulation using my hot-wire foam cutter,
with the exception of the railings and railing pylons. Paul and I took a
field trip to the bridge and took many measurements, which helped for
details, but for the most part I was able to make my template drawings from
photos found on the Library of Congress HAER (Historical American
Engineering Record) website. I have a PowerPoint presentation of the process
that I just put together and showed at the RPM meet in Malvern, PA. I will
certainly be showing it again in the near future, and I will let the list
know when that may happen.

I can't take all the credit for the model - Paul himself gets credit for the
final detailing in the form of adding all of those pylons (around 150 of
them, IIRC) and railings. I made acrylic masters for the pylons; Paul made a
mold and cast them in resin, then drilled them all for the wire. Paul also
completed the painting and weathering, and, of course, we installed it
together. And it is definitely a signature element, there's no doubt about
that.

Jim Harr

PS I have attached a photo of what you see when you walk down into Paul's
basement and look to the right (photo taken before Paul completed all the
scenery).
