They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Sometimes a map is too. I have
attached a map of the BC Junction area based on one of the corrections maps I
did for Bill Metzger for his August 2008 TRAINS 1942 Buffalo "Map of the
Month" that Ron Dukarm and I worked on. I have foredated it to approxmately
1965. The "SD45" notation at center left shows where the EL unit is in Harry
Mitchell's image.

This was (and still is) one of the busiest junctions in the Buffalo area. The
EL train is crossing Buffalo Creek's bridge over the Buffalo River. The N&W
unit at left (an Alco T-6?) is coming from or heading to N&W's ex-NKP Buffalo
Jct yard. In the foreground are the Buffalo Creek's main tracks that lead to
their yards, LV's Tifft Yard and Lake Erie. The operator or switch tender is
standing next to the connection to the EL's B&SW line. The two tracks crossing
the BC at the diamonds are N&W's ex-NKP line to Erie, PA and Bellevue, OH.
Further in the right background are the Chessie (B&O, BR&P) and South Buffalo
Railway's connections to the BC. The buildings beyond are Republic Steel.
Immediately behind us are the diamonds where the PC (NYC, LS&MS) Chicago main
crosses the BC. A little over a mile beyond the lift bridges is FW Tower where
the EL/Erie crossed and connected with the BC, NKP, PRR and at one time, the
West Shore.

BC's Buffalo River bridge is the one that's still used today. The NKP bridge
is permanently welded in the raised position and the bridge tender's shack
gone. In fact, all the signals and buildings in this photo are long gone,
including Republic Steel.

I wish I visited this location before CR changed everything. It must have been
a great railfanning spot!
