My Dad was the radio technician for the Marion Division from 1948 until his
passing in Feb. 1976. He covered not only the locomotive radios in the
Marion shop but he was also responsible for the outlying base stations for
the Marion Division; everything from Kent, Ohio to Chicago. Erie and later,
EL also had a smaller radio shop at Hornell which Dad would occasionally
have to cover as well. I remember as a kid, traveling with him many times to
Meadville, Hornell and points westward to Chicago. A couple of times, we
even took passenger trains and over-nighted at the destination until
whatever repairs he had to make were completed.

The attached photo is of Dad and his helper (can't remember his name) and
was taken shortly after the "new" radio shop was opened on the second floor
of the new Marion Diesel Shop. It was across the hall from the
Superintendent's Office. This was a "staged" photo, taken by John Long. Dad
often joked about how they had to remove all the cables, radio "junk" and
tools of the trade from the benches to make the photo "cleaner"! Those of
you who work with any kind of radio equipment know that the bench is NEVER
this clean.... LOL

In later years, I think about 1970, the radio shop was moved down to ground
level at the west end of the diesel shop in what used to be the battery shop
where it remained 'til the end.
