In July of 1985, I heard that several of the former EL SDP45's were in
storage on the N&W at Roanoke, VA. So having nothing to do one summer
weekend (gas was a LOT cheaper, too), I drove down. Spent the first night at
a motel overlooking the main N&W shops and Schaeffer's Crossing. I ran into
another railfan there who told me where the engines were stored so I headed
that way, doubtful that I would be able to see them. On my arrival at the
yard, I went inside and asked permission to see the former Erie Lackawanna
engines and without hesitation, the yardmaster said "Sure, just don't fall
off anything. Anyone says anything, just tell 'em Red said you was OK" and
pointed me the way to the storage lines. There, I found three SDP's, two in
CR blue and the 6668 still in EL colors! Unfortunately, the photo I took of
the 6668 (attached) was badly backlit since I was shooting almost directly
into the sun, but I was still elated at having found these old friends. But
back to the topic, yes, times have drastically changed. This wouldn't happen
today, I'm sure. Ahhhhh, the good old days......
