Subject: Dayton and Hamburg NY Erie Stations
"Original_Hamburg_NY_Erie_passenger_station.jpg" - image/jpeg, 640x352 (24bit)

Bob Frost wondered about two distinctly different Dayton stations as shown
in http://lists.railfan.net/listthumb.cgi?erielack-04-23-17 and
http://lists.railfan.net/listthumb.egi?erielack-04-24-17. If one was
possibly on the Buffalo & Southwestern and the other be on the Salamanca to
Dunkirk branch? That sounds possible or could they be from different eras?

I discovered that the photo of the Hamburg NY station that Pat posted
Sunday (and which I have taken the liberty of reposting) was actually the
first freight/passenger station constructed by Erie in Hamburg, right after
leasing the B&SW in 1880. It was known locally as the Union Street station.
According to the Town of Hamburg History Society's website, by the 1910s
(ironically around the time the Erie station photo N-01 was taken) the
local passenger business had grown to the point that a new station was
needed. The new station, called Pleasant Avenue station locally (located a
few hundred feet north of Union Street), was finished in 1923 and opened in
1924. Union Street then served as the Erie freight station in Hamburg.

I found some local commentary recalling the later station and the suburban
trains it served. One man said his mother told him when she was younger, in
the 1920s and 1930s, she frequently rode the train with her mother to go
shopping in Buffalo. On weekends her family used to ride to Buffalo to see
the Buffalo Bisons baseball team play.

Both stations still exist and I am attaching two photos of the stations as
they appear today. Again, according to the local historical society, the
Pleasant Avenue station became a Town office and the Union Street station
became a hobby shop. First operated as Dave Earle's model railroad shop and
today as Artcraft Toy Trains.
