Subject: (erielack) EL bay window caboose width?
"Photo_02.jpg" - image/jpeg, 1050x659 (24bit)

Pat and list;

I can not answer your question regarding the width of the caboose, but have
you considered the Athearn bay window caboose as a starting point? Since you
would have to do pretty major surgery to the Atlas model, I personally don't
see it as a viable alternative. I don't know if you were (or are) a member
of ELHS when I did the very first From the Workbench, which was all about
converting the Athearn caboose into a pretty respectable model. I have
attached a photo of one of my models (taken before I upgraded the models to
photo-etched running boards); the procedure is really quite simple: cut new
side sheets from .010 styrene, extend the roof eave on the ends, fabricate
new railings, adjust a few other details, paint and decal and voila - an EL
bay window caboose. I will be happy to send you a photocopy of the article;
contact me off-list if interested [although I have been working on getting
the article posted on the ELHS website, with the original color photos I
took - stay tuned for an update].

Hey Paul (or anyone else),

Next time you are at the museum, can you take your tape measure and check
how wide the EL bay window cabooses (C351 - 370) were? I've got a fuzzy
copy of the EL diagram book which I think indicates a width of 9' 3". If
that is the case, then the Atlas wide-vision/standard cupola caboose model
has the same width. The Walthers International bay window caboose measures
8' wide and most of the windows are in the wrong spot, not to mention the
X-panel roof which is also wrong. I'm looking for a starting point for a
kitbash and I'm thinking that the Atlas model is the place to start. Three
of four windows are in the right spot and it has the proper Stanray roof.
The smaller rounded windows have to be filled in and the cupola replaced
with a bay window. It has potential, if it is not too wide.

Thanks!
