Subject: A partially unexpected EL archaeology tour :)
"ss6733.jpg" - image/jpeg, 2400x1600 (24bit)

A good friend of mine is a member of the PRRT&HS, and he mentioned to me that they were doing a steel mill tour AND a tour of the
former PRR Juniata Shops in Altoona during this year's convention. I jumped at that chance!

The steel mill tour was fascinating - it was Standard Steel at Burnham, PA. It's a very old facility (was there since the late
1700s) and today they solely manufacture high-quality railroad wheels and axles, all from recycled scrap steel. They also have
three EMD switchers to work the plant - two formerly from the Juniata Valley Railroad (which is also their connection to the
national rail network) and one formerly of the North Shore Railroad. The North Shore, as you may know, paints all their locomotives
in the EL GMY scheme with North Shore lettering. I photographed the ex-North Shore switcher, an SW8 numbered 6733, while it was
doing some work from a public street. Steve Timko later pointed out that he thought that it was an ACTUAL former EL unit, and when I
got home, I checked my notes, and sure enough it is! North Shore/Standard Steel 6733 was originally EL 368 (nee-DL&W 508). The unit
is now equipped with remote control for one-man operation, but is still dutifully moving around cars of scrap and other metal
products.

During the Juniata shop tour the next day, I tried to keep my eye out for NS' "prime mover test bed) 1000, which was formerly EL
SD45 3632. Crossing between two shop buildings, I spotted it in the distance and got a photo of it (sorry I couldn't get a better
photo, but we had to follow our tour guide and stay within the specified walking areas). Lastly, as our bus was leaving, I spotted
EL 7552, one of the former Erie 75' flats that were lengthened by the EL to 85'. The car, other than some primer spray marks, is
still in its original EL paint. My attached (admittedly lousy) shot of the car taken from the bus is attached as well. It's used
today to transfer diesel hoods between shop buildings.

Oh yes, I was told that NS 1700 (ex-EL SD45-2 3669) was also somewhere there for some routine work, but I wasn't able to spot it....

Not too shabby for two days in Pennsylvania!
