Yet another schedule change (wow!), tracking the E's and F's, the signs of the end of the Cleveland/Youngstown commuter train, and
(I had to toss this in) a note about the end of the Hoboken Shore RR - I never knew the exact date, but this shows that it outlived
the EL by a few months....

Also, a neat realignment map of northern NJ commuter lines by Don Dorflinger is attached (scanned from this issue)

NEWS FROM FORMER E-L TERRITORIES. CHANGES IN FREIGHT SCHEDULES FOR FORMER E-L LINES. Continuing our update of the CRC freight
schedule for ex-EL territories (see Summer Extra), we have the following:

In order to provide for the handling of Olean, NY freight traffic classified at Meadville, PA, the schedule for NY-72 is altered as
follows, effective October 11, 1976:
Lv. HORNELL 1705
Ps. BINGHAMTON 2045
Ar. SCRANTON 2225
Lv. SCRANTON 2330
Ar. STROUDSBURG 0130
Ps. SLATEFORD JCT. 0245
Ar. PORT MORRIS 0330
Lv. PORT MORRIS 0400
Ar. CROXTON 0630
The block for Portland, PA is set off at East Stroudsburg, and the Dover, NJ block is set off at Port Morris.

Freight TV-98 is still running on the same schedule, but has had a FREQUENCY change. Formerly a DAILY train, 98 now operated DAILY
EXCEPT SUNDAY out of Chicago, which translates as DAILY EXCEPT MONDAY east of Hornell. The train is still scheduled via the Jervis
side, arriving Croxton 0830. Correct your schedules members! (Preceding from Frank Tatnall, Philadelphia Chaper, NRHS)

NEW PASSENGER SCHEDUES SHOW JERVIS CHANGE. New NJ DOT/Conrail passenger timetables were issued on Oct. 1st for the Main Line/Bergen
County Line, and the Boonton Line (Greenwood Lake Branch). Apparently abandoning their previous policy, the new tables are printed
on colored stock.in fact, the timetables are now back to their pre-CRC ex-EL colors! The Boonton Line table is on salmon paper with
red print, and the Main Line table is on light green paper with brown print.

In addition, a rare change for the schedules of Port Jervis trains #54 and 57. 54 now leaves Port 11 minutes earlier, at 6:38 AM,
while 57 departs Hoboken 9 minutes later at 4:39 PM. (John Fiorilla)

Frank Reilly indicates that more changes are in store for the timetable collectors as of October 31 when the following will be
released: CNJ Main Line and Philadelphia service (white paper with red ink); New York & Long Branch (white paper with blue print);
P.C. Main Line (light blue paper with dark blue print); ex-E-L Morristown Line (white paper with blue print); ex-E-L Pascack Valley
Line (yellow paper with black print). Frank also notes that the Morristown Line and NY&LB tables are unchanged from the previous
issue and probably will not be changed in the near future.

TRACKING THE ELUSIVE E's and F's IN OCTOBER. The number of former Erie Lackawanna E-units that are currently active under Conrail
has dwindled from 8 (October Block Line) to 6, reports Frank Tatnall. #822 was on train FE-1 (Fort Wayne to Elkhart, IND) on October
7th. #812, 813 and 819 teamed up on EF-2 (the other way) on the 16th. Thus, 818 and 821 have disappeared, at least temporarily (#825
and 833 are still on the Cleveland to Youngstown passenger train). Units reported in the October Block Line as "whereabouts unknown"
are probably in storage at Bellefontaine, OH awaiting disposition. Can anyone give a confirmation???

Frank also reports on the monthly status of the remaining E-L F-units:
#6321 on Train MC-6A Bellefontaine to Toledo, OH on 10/11
#6361 on Train OT-7 Columbus to Toledo, OH on 10/5
#7101 on Train STR-1 Streator (ILL) to ATSF on 10/7
#7104 on Train TC-2 Toledo to Cleveland, OH on 10/14
#7113 on Train OT-7 Columbus to Toledo, OH on 10/18
#7114 on Train ST-2 Gibsonburg to Conway, OH on 10/2
#7121 on Train DSL-1 Bellefontaine, OH to Avon, IND on 10/4
#7131 on Train HM-2 Elkhart, IND to Cleveland, OH on 10/12
Thus, 7111 is the only casualty.

SUSQUEHANNA DIVISION EXPANDED AGAIN. The Hornell, NY-based Susquehanna Division of Conrail was expanded on October 20th to include
an additional 200 miles of trackage. Among the lines added were the ex-PC Corning branch from Jersey Shore, PA to Geneva, NY and the
ex-PC line from Horseheads, NY to beyond Penn Yan, NY. The former is an important route for coal trains, and the latter serves the
salt mines in the Finger Lakes area.

CRC President and Chief Operating Officer Richard Spence indicated that Hornell was to become the center of rail operations for the
Southern Tier of New York State. The role of the former E-L offices would be expanded in the future as additional hardware for rail
operations and communications was shifted there. Plans call for the CTC board currently at Buffalo to be shifted to Hornell as part
of the centralization of dispatching. (from CONRAIL NEWS courtesy of Frank Tatnall)

E-L BICENTENNIALS STILL ROLLING. and, occasionally into Croxton itself! #3638 rolled into Croxton on Sunday, October 10, while its
sister unit #3632 was over at Meadows Yard in Kearny. More frequently, however, reports Frank Tatnall, the units are spotted on the
Reading Division. On October 18th, the units worked together on Train RR-3 (Rutherford to Conway) and repeated the assignment on
10/19 on Train RR-1.

BRAKEMAN IS KILLED AT PORT MORRIS. A 56 year-old Conrail brakeman was killed early October 19th when he was crushed between his
diesel locomotive and a standing freight car. Robert Thomas of Scranton, PA died about 2:30 AM. The five unit diesel was backing
into a cut of cars at the time. The PUC is investigating. (Star Ledger)

FLASH. EX EL E8 #825 IS NOW CONRAIL #4014. Unit was "treated" at Brier Hill Shops where the old roadname, number and herald were
painted over. The E-L heralds were "marooned" over and white "CR" was applied. New large white numbers appear over the old numbers
in the maroon band. 833 is still un-touched. (Rich Behrendt) Rich also reports heavy trackwork on the Akron Division.

CONRAIL'S EX-EL CLEVELAND-YOUNGSTOWN SERVICE MAY BE ABOUT TO DIE. Conrail reports that this service is the only one for which no
notice was received from a public agency to enter into a contract for continuation of the service during the second 180 day period
(which commenced on September 28th). The second 180-day period subsidy requirements were to be paid 100% with Federal funds under
the 4R act, providing a public agency indicated a willingness to enter into a contract for service continuation. Before Conrail can
discontinue the service, they must provide 60 days' notice. Take a trip and shoot those E's while you can members! (Frank Reilly)

LONG HILL CLAIMS ANOTHER VICTIM: The stage was set for an old-time Friday night on October 15th at Great Notch as Conrail freight
BH-4 with 87 cars and 4 ex-PC junkers was all set to follow Passenger 1042 east out of Lincoln Park. With one unit down and another
nearly so, the consist got no further than the Peckman Creek bridge at Cedar Grove curve when she stalled. Fortunately, CS-9 was
waiting at Great Notch, held by the red signal at the end of the double track. Upon orders from the Dispatcher, CS-9 YARDED his
train at the Notch (all 22 cars of it) in order to avoid plugging westbound passenger #1015, which was due to leave Hoboken at 10:00
PM. His three units were then run out to the ailing BH-4 to give a pull. After some difficulty in getting the brakes released, the
consist came east. all 7 units and the train. The heartbreaker? Well, CS-9's trailing unit was now in command. an ex-CNJ SD-35! Why
don't these things ever happen in daylight????? (Staff)

MORE CONRAIL REPAINTS:
SD45 #6080 (ex-EL #3615) with logo 8/9
U36C #6591 (ex-EL #3320) with logo 10/23
SDP45 #6678 (ex-EL #3647) with logo ??

An EL GP35 holds the distinction of being the first "Conrailized" engine to be "Deconrailized." #2571 got her roadnames painted out
and little "CR" applied to the ends (though she was not renumbered). Somewhere, someone got a hole of some EL yellow and PC
stencils, and removed the "CR" from the ends, replacing it with PC-style lettering that proclaims "EL" in maroon! (Staff)

ANOTHER SIGHTING. arriving too late for the above album was GP35 #3683 (ex-EL #2578) spotted on Oct. 10th in Kingston, NY by reader
Gene Dauner.

HOBOKEN SHORE RAILROAD BITES THE DUST. Operations ceased on the Hoboken Shore Railroad shortly after 5 PM on Friday, October 22nd.
The two remaining 44 tonners, #70 and 71 [700 and 701] were pulled out of the roundhouse [enginehouse] in Hoboken and moved to the
Erie interchange. Reports indicate that they have been sold to the New Hope & Ivyland. (Bill Sheppard)
