Subject: ERIE TELEPHONE TRAIN ORDER SIGNALS
"Addison_w_B_O_2-8-0_1950ish.jpg" - image/jpeg, 750x497 (24bit)

I have been posting pictures on the WA&G and EL sites on facebook pages at
Addison, NY. I started with this one with this one, a David Connor slide,
with Erie GP-7 1218 and a WAG FORD switcher in Addison and someone pointed
out to me that the semaphore on the right has 2 arms a pointed-automatic and
flat-absolute, note the second blade hanging below. The Erie had what the
Lackawanna men on the west end called a "poor man's CTC"* . The dispatcher
could throw that flat bladed top blade to stop, and a train had to stop and
call the dispatcher on the wayside phone. Up ahead, west of here there, was
a center siding and the train could be ordered to proceed to that switch and
hand throw himself into that siding. This siding west of Addison was gone in
the early 70's.
William Strassner, reports " that Addison is missing from the EL ETT #4
dated Feb 24, 1974 and that it is DEFINITELY a Telephone Train Order
Signal, EL Rules 296-7-8. The Erie had them all over, 16 on Susquehanna
Division alone!"

There was one at Canaseraga, NY, west of Hornell, here's a shot of it that
I David J. Monte Verde took in Feb 1974 , showing a wb EL train w/ caboose
338 passing the east Telephone Train Signal at MP 343-1B. There was an
equilateral turn out so a train in either direction could enter or leave the
siding. You can see the exit switch for eastbounds off to the left of the
caboose. This signal and siding lasted into Conrail and in the late 70's it
was stuffed with HBO cars.
